What do I require to start driving?
A provisional licence. To apply you can pick up a D1 application form from the post office or on line at www.direct.gov.uk. You can then take lessons while studying your theory test.
How many lessons will I need?
Driving is a skill, some learn quicker than others. You instructor is there to monitor your progress. You will be assessed as to when you are ready to take your test. We would recommend that you take at least one, two hour lessons per week, this would progress your driving more quickly.
Will I be expected to know the basics of driving?
No don’t worry. All abilities are catered for by your instructor, from total beginners to people near their tests, refresher lessons or advanced driving lessons.
Can I learn with friends or relatives?
The driving standards agency (DSA) strongly recommends lessons from approved driving instructors. Friends or relatives must be over 21 years of age and have held a full licence for at least 3 years.
Do I need to pass theory before driving lessons?
No. starting lessons before your theory can be very helpful in making the theory easier to understand. You cannot book your driving test until the theory is passed.
Can I make savings on lessons?
Yes you can. If you wish to book lessons in advance please refer to price list. Any money paid in advance is not refundable. All lessons will be honoured when paid for in advance within reasonable time limit.
Do you do intensive courses?
Yes it it’s possible to get intensive lessons but this is not ‘off the shelf’ and is dictated by available space.
Do you teach automatic cars?
Unfortunately we do not have automatic tuition cars.
Do I need to study for my theory/driving test?
To be fully prepared for your tests it is recommended you study. The DSA recommend the Highway Code; know your traffic signs, the driving manual, and your theory test. You can get any of these from most book shops or direct from the DSA website. The CD ROMs are highly recommended.
What does the theory consist of?
The theory test is in two parts, 50 multiple choice questions, followed by a hazard perception part. This consists of 14 video clips. You have to identify 15 developing hazards one clip having two on it.
What happens on the day of my driving test?
The test lasts for 35 – 40 minutes and is conducted by a DSA examiner. You start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. Your drive will then begin which includes some specific maneuver. Your tuition vehicle is used for the test. You are watched for a safe standard of driving. A maximum of 15 driver faults is allowed. Over results in a fail. One serious or dangerous fault will fail your test. Do not believe what you hear. Examiners are nice and are not out to fail you.
When passed can I improve my driving with any more courses?
Yes. The DSA do a pass plus scheme consisting of six practical modules to be taken within the first year after you pass your test. Insurance can be reduced after completing the course. Other training courses can be given. Ask your instructor.
Do you do refresher courses for qualified drivers?
Yes. They are designed for confidence building. We can also develop driving skills for advanced driving tests or for training ADI’s for their driving test.
Do you pick up from home?
Yes. Lessons are door to door. Arrangements for other places can be made with your instructor.
